SUNTORY HAKU presents
A Zen Tea Retreat
of Simplicity and Quiet Brilliance
A First-of-Its-Kind Encounter in Kyoto —
Where Tea Meets
Japanese Craft Spirit.
In this retreat,
tea is not only preserved —
it is reinterpreted.
Guided by a tea master
at a Zen temple in Kyoto,
ceremonial matcha
unfolds twice.
First as a ritual —
then as an original
matcha cocktail
composed with HAKU.
Not a departure from tradition —
its quiet evolution.
Not a Tour.
Not a Tasting.
A Meeting of Quiet and Craft —
where tea ceremony
and handcrafted spirit
meet
in a single
moment of clarity.

Where Simplicity
Becomes Brilliance
This is not an experience
designed to overwhelm.
Here, simplicity becomes
a space for perception —
and perception
becomes an encounter.
Through the deliberate stillness
of tea practice,
and the crystalline purity
of a craft spirit,
what remains is clarity —
felt,
not explained.
Within that simplicity,
brilliance naturally emerges —
not something added,
but something revealed.

The Philosophy of HAKU
Simplicity, Refined into Brilliance
HAKU is built on the same essential values that shape this retreat:
simplicity and brilliance —
refined, not embellished.
In tea and craft spirit,
simplicity is not the absence of feeling,
but the clarity
that remains
when distractions fall away.
Not just purity of flavor,
but resonance —
with intention,
with presence.
This retreat follows that philosophy.
By refining movement, sound, and intention to their essence,
space is created
for brilliance to emerge —
quiet,
restrained,
deeply moving.
Not fleeting excitement,
but lasting resonance.

A Carefully Composed Experience
Under the quiet guidance of a tea practitioner,
the retreat unfolds within the gardens
and tea spaces of a Zen temple.
Here, instruction is not the focus —
attention is guided
through movement,
silence,
and presence.
As awareness sharpens through ritual,
the clarity of tea
and the subtle purity of HAKU
begin to move
within the same inner rhythm.
Moving between garden,
tea room,
and silence,
distractions fall away —
simplicity sharpen perception,
and brilliance is felt,
not explained.

Ryosokuin Temple
A Place of Rare Stillness
The retreat takes place at Ryosokuin,
a sub-temple of Kennin-ji —
Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple.
Ryosokuin is not generally open to the public.
Traditionally reserved for contemplation,
its architecture, garden, and ritual
remain quietly intact.
Stillness in such a setting
cannot be replicated.

For Those Who
Recognize Quiet Value
This experience is for those
who recognize value beyond visibility.
Not for the eye alone —
but for felt memory.
Profound moments
are not captured or explained —
but lived.
Where quiet meets craft,
and stillness finds its singular taste.
